Good morning. So many of the folks in the eastern US will be affected by Hurricane Ivan. While many of you were blessed by his eventual route, so many were not. And, many who were most profoundly affected cannot read this as they are without power. My heart goes out to all of you who are in his path, even if you cannot read this now. For those of you who do have power, please stop by the Discussion Forum at QT and let us know you are alright. We are worried and a word from you will help assuage our fears.

God works in mysterious ways, doesn't He?

Isn't it amazing how God works in our lives! On a Saturday night several weeks ago, this pastor was working late, and decided to call his wife before he left for home. It was about 10:00! PM, but his wife didn't answer the phone.

The pastor let the phone ring many times. He thought it was odd that she didn't answer, but decided to wrap up a few things and try again in a few minutes. When he tried again she answered right away. He asked her why she hadn't answered before, and she said that it hadn't rung at their house. They brushed it off as a fluke and went on their merry ways.

The following Monday, the pastor received a call at the church office, which was the phone that he'd used that Saturday night. The man that he spoke with wanted to know why he'd called on Saturday night.

The pastor couldn't figure out what the man was talking about. Then the man said, "It rang and rang, but I didn't answer." The pastor remembered the mishap and apologized for disturbing him, explaining that he'd intended to call his wife.

The man said, "That's, OK. Let me tell you my story.

You see, I was planning to commit suicide on Saturday night, but before I did, I prayed, 'God if you're there, and you don't want me to do this, give me a sign now.' At that point my phone started to ring. I looked at the caller ID, and it said, 'Almighty God'. I was afraid to answer!"

The reason why it showed on the man's caller ID that the call came from "Almighty God" is because the church that the pastor attends is called Almighty God Tabernacle!!

If you believe that God answers prayers then pass this on. God bless!

HOUSEHOLD TIPS

Flies bothering you? Spray them with hairspray and they will take a quick dive.

Sealed envelope - Put in the freezer for a few hours, then slide a knife under the flap. The envelope can then be resealed.

Use empty toilet paper roll to store appliance cords. It keeps them neat and you can write on the roll what appliance it belongs to.

For icy doorsteps in freezing temperatures: get warm water and put Dawn dish washing liquid in it. Pour it all over the steps. They won't refreeze.

Crayon marks on walls? This worked wonderfully! A damp rag dipped in baking soda. Comes off with little effort (elbow grease that is)!

Permanent marker on appliances/counter tops? Rubbing alcohol on paper towel.

Opening brand new jars can be a feat in itself. Instead of banging a jar of jam, pickles, etc., with a knife until it loosens up, simply reach into the drawer and pull out the handy nutcracker. It adjusts to the size of the jar and simply give it a good twist and off pops the lid!

Blood stains on clothes? Not to worry! Just pour a little peroxide on cloth and proceed to wipe off every drop of blood. Works every time!

Use vertical strokes when washing windows outside and horizontal for inside windows. This way you can tell which side has the streaks.

Straight vinegar will get outside windows really clean. Don't wash windows on sunny day. They will dry too quickly and will probably streak.

Spray a bit of perfume on the light bulb in any room to create a lovely light scent in each room when the light is turned on.

Place fabric softener sheets in dresser drawers and your clothes will smell freshly washed for weeks to come. You can also do this with towels and linen.

Candles will last a lot longer if placed in the freezer for at least 3 hours prior to burning.

Hi Maggie,

Brenda from Alabama here. My Mom had prayer at church on Sunday and went for more tests and the doctor can't find an aneurysm in her stomach! He was baffled. I want to thank the A2Z readers for all their prayers. Also my daughter came to south Alabama to her in laws and is safe from the hurricane. Thank you all so much. God still answers prayer!

I am a bit of a purist when it comes to what I eat. However, I firmly believe that recipes using wild or weird meats and/or ingredients probably are delicious...so long as I don't know they are there. Do you have a recipe that uses an unusual ingredient or combination of ingredients that you'd like to share? Our a2z family who gathers regularly in the QT discussion forum thought this would be fun. A to Z Recipes continues with its popular Theme Issues. We will share theme recipes and post them on the first Sunday of each month. Send your recipes no later than the last Friday of each month to have them posted in the next monthly theme issue. You may send in TWO of your favorite theme recipes and in ONE email. If the number of recipes exceeds those needed in the issue, the publisher will post as many from every submitter as possible and save the remaining recipes for the following Sundays of that month. The rules for recipe submissions for the monthly theme issues are the same as ALL recipes submitted for posting.

The rules are as follows:

As a service to your fellow readers, please send only recipes that are in a form that others could easily copy and save for their own use. Recipes that would require a lot of editing or cleaning up or use non-standard measurements should not be submitted. A True Story

This is a true story. It may have happened to you!

I know you have read the scare-mail about the person whose kidneys were stolen while he was passed out. Whilst that was an "urban legend," this one is not. It's happening every day. I'm sending this warning to all of my closest friends. You, too, may have been a victim. Read on.

My thighs were stolen from me during the night of August 3rd a few years ago. It was just that quick. I went to sleep in my body and woke up with someone else's thighs. The new ones had the texture of cooked oatmeal.

Whose thighs were these? What happened to mine? I spend the entire summer looking for them. I searched, in vain, at pools and beaches, anyplace where female limbs might be exposed. I became obsessed I had nightmares filled with cellulite and flesh that turned to bumps in the night.

Finally, hurt and angry, I resigned myself to living out my life in jeans and Sheer Energy pantyhose.

Then, just when my guard was down, the thieves struck again. My butt was next. I knew it was the same gang, because they took pains to match my new butt, although it was badly attached. It was three inches lower than the original to the thighs they had stuck me with earlier.

A year later, it was my breasts. Once full, yet perky, they now lay like bags of water on my chest, no longer proudly pointing forward to greet the world, but looking down at my feet, as though hanging in shame.

Two years ago, I realized my arms had been switched. One morning while fixing my hair, I watched, horrified but fascinated, as the flesh of my upper arms swung to and fro with the motion of the hairbrush. Bat wings!! And I didn't even see the Bat Signal! This was really getting scary!!!

My body was being replaced, cleverly and fiendishly, one section at a time. In the end, in deepening despair, I gave up my t-shirts. What could they do to me next?

Age? Age had nothing to do with it. Age was supposed to creep up, unnoticed and intangible, something like maturity. NO, I was being attacked, repeatedly and without warning.

That's why I've decided to share my story. I can't take on the medical profession by myself. Women of the world, wake up and smell the coffee!

That isn't really "plastic" those surgeons are using. You know where they're getting those replacement parts, don't you? The next time you suspect someone has had a face "lifted," look again! Was it lifted from you? Check out those tummy tucks and butt raisings. Look familiar? Are those your eyelids on that movie star?

I think I finally may have found my thighs, and I hope Cindy Crawford paid a really good price for them!

This is NOT a hoax! This is happening every night to women in every town all across the world. Warn your FRIENDS!



Memorial Stone

A woman's husband dies. He had $20,000 to his name. After everything is done at the funeral home and cemetery, she tells her closest friend that there is no money left. The friend says, "How can that be? You told me he had $20,000 a few days before he died. How could you be broke?"

The widow says, "Well, the funeral cost me $6,500. And of course, I had to make the obligatory donation for the church and the organist and all.

That was $500 and I spent another $500 for the wake, food and drinks, you know. The rest went for the memorial stone."

The friend says, "$12,500 for the memorial stone? My God, how big is it?"

The widow says, "Three carats".

BLEU DE BRESSE BAKED POTATOES

4 Idaho potatoes (about 8 ounces each) scrubbed and patted dry
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 large cloves garlic, very finely minced
1/2 cup sour cream
2 ounces Bleu de Bresse or other mild blue cheese
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
2 tablespoons freshly snipped chives
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Paprika, to taste

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Prick the potatoes all over and place them on a baking sheet. Bake for 1/14 hours.

Melt the butter in a skillet, add the garlic, and cook over very low heat for 1 1/2 minutes; do not let it brown. Set aside.

Remove the potatoes but leave the oven on. Allow the potatoes to cool slightly. Then cut a lengthwise slit in the top of each potato and carefully remove the pulp. Leaving the skin intact. Place the pulp in a mixing bowl, and set the skins aside.

Mash the potato pulp with a fork. Add the garlic butter, sour cream, cheese, parsley, 1 tablespoon chives, and salt and pepper. Mix thoroughly, and then carefully stuff the mixture back into the potato skins, mounding it slightly. Sprinkle the top lightly with paprika.

Arrange the potatoes on a baking sheet, and bake for 15 minutes. Sprinkle with the remaining chives and serve immediately.

Serves 4




MACARONI AND CHEESE
(Eastern European flavor)

6 (6-ounce) boneless skinless chicken breasts
2 tablespoons Hungarian paprika
1 tablespoon kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 quart heavy cream
2 tablespoons of thyme
2 pounds of cooked rigatoni
6 ounces goat cheese

Season chicken breasts with paprika salt and pepper and set aside. Heat olive oil in large saute pan and place chicken in it browning on both sides. Place in 400-degree oven for 8 to10 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool then dice into large pieces. Heat cream in large saucepan, add herbs, salt, and pepper and reduce by half. Add the cooked rigatoni, cheese and cooked chicken and simmer for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and serve.




BISHOP'S HATS

350*

1/2 c soft butter
1/4 c brown sugar
1 c flour
1 jar apricot jam (or one to your taste)
1 pkg large marshmallows (white)
12 small muffin pans

Cream butter; add sugar and cream until evenly blended. Add flour gradually until pastry is pliable and your bowl comes clean. Pat in small muffin pans, slightly greased (Pam). Bake at 350*F for 20-15 minutes until golden brown.

Add 1 TBSP apricot jam to each one and top with 1/2 large marshmallow.

Return to oven (350*F) until marshmallow is golden brown, 10 minutes approximately.

NO-BAKE HOLIDAY FRUIT CAKE
Makes 1 - 9x5 inch loaf

1 (16 ounce) package graham crackers, crushed
6 ounces red candied cherries, coarsely chopped
6 ounces green candied cherries, coarsely chopped
6 ounces candied pineapple, coarsely chopped
2 (14 ounce) cans sweetened condensed milk
1 1/2 cups chopped pecans

Line one 9x5 inch loaf pan with plastic wrap, allowing wrap to hang over edges a few inches. In a large bowl, combine the graham crackers, red and green cherries, pineapple, pecans, and the sweetened condensed milk, using your hands mix thoroughly. Place mixture into lined pan and cover well. Freeze for at least 8 hours or overnight before serving. When ready to serve; invert onto a serving platter, remove pan and plastic wrap, and slice. Store any remaining cake in the freezer.

Makes 12 servings.




ORANGE-GLAZED GAME HENS

(Marinate the game hens overnight.)

¾ cup fresh orange juice
½ cup orange honey
¼ cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
2 tablespoons minced orange peel (orange part only)
3 large garlic cloves, pressed
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
2 teaspoons oriental sesame oil
2 1 ½-pound Cornish game hens, halved

3 oranges, peeled, white pith removed
sesame seeds
6 ounces snow peas

Mix first 8 ingredients in large bowl. Add hens skin-side down. Cover and refrigerate 24 hours, turning once.

Using small sharp knife, cut between membranes of oranges to release segments; set side.

Preheat oven to 400° F. Transfer hens to shallow baking pan. Place marinade in heavy small saucepan and boil until reduced to ¾ cup, about 12 minutes. Brush both sides of hens with reduced marinade. Arrange skin side up ion pan. Roast 5 minutes. Baste hens. Cook 10 minutes longer. Reduce oven temperature to 350° F. Baste hens and cook 10 minutes. Sprinkle hens with sesame seeds and roast until cooked through, about 10 minutes longer. Let stand for 10 minutes.

Cook snow peas in pot of boiling salted water until crisp-tender, 1 to 2 minutes. Drain. Place 2 hen half in center of each plate. Alternate snow peas and orange segments around hens.

Heart Healthy...




SPICY SALSA CHICKEN GRILL

(Serves 6)

1/3 cup fresh lime juice
2 teaspoons minced chives
2 teaspoons minced ginger
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 teaspoons chili powder
1 cup hot salsa
1 ½ pounds boneless, skinless chicken breast

In a small saucepan, mix together the lime juice, chives, ginger, and garlic. Add the olive oil and chili powder, and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Stir in the salsa. Allow sauce to cool. Place the chicken in a plastic bag. Add the sauce, and let marinade in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or up to 24 hours.

Prepare an outside grill with an oiled rack set 4 inches above the heat source. On a gas grill, set the heat to high. Grill the chicken breasts for 3-4 minutes on each side, turning once and basting with extra marinade, until the chicken is cooked through.

For Two...



BACON-WRAPPED GARLIC ASPARAGUS

4 cloves garlic - minced
1 Tbs. chopped fresh parsley
1/4 cup olive oil
1 lb. fresh asparagus
1/2 lb. raw bacon
salt and pepper - to taste

In a sauté pan over medium heat, cook garlic and parsley in oil for 3 minutes.

Break tough ends off asparagus.

Lay 4-5 stalks of asparagus in the center of each strip of bacon; drizzle garlic oil over each bundle of asparagus; wrap the bacon around the stalks and secure with a toothpick.

Lay asparagus bundles on a cookie sheet and sprinkle with salt and pepper; bake in a 400 degree oven for 20-25 minutes, or until bacon is cooked OR grill on top rack until bacon is cooked.

You'll never "boil" asparagus again!

GREEN BEANS WITH SHIITAKE MUSHROOMS

6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) butter
8 ounces fresh shiitake mushrooms, stemmed, caps sliced
2 shallots, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 pounds slender green beans, trimmed
2/3 cup canned low-salt chicken broth

Melt 3 tablespoons butter in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add shiitake mushrooms and sauté until tender, about 5 minutes.

Transfer mushrooms to medium bowl. Melt remaining 3 tablespoons butter in same skillet. Add shallots and garlic and sauté until tender, about 2 minutes. Add green beans and toss to coat with butter. Pour broth over green bean mixture. Cover and simmer until liquid evaporates and green beans are crisp-tender, about 10 minutes. Stir in shiitake mushrooms. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Transfer to platter and serve.

Makes 8 servings.
